چکیده

We apply the bosonization technique to the problem of tunneling in a Fermi liquid, and present a semiclassical theory of tunneling rates. To test the method, we derive and evaluate an expression for the tunneling current in the problem of two parallel Luttinger liquids. Next we study tunneling between parallel two dimensional Fermi liquids. In the absence of a magnetic field, the conductance I/V has a resonance peak at zero bias. Our estimate for the peak broadening agrees with the many-body theory results. In a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane, we find a tunneling gap linear in the field, in agreement with the experiment. In this regime the tunneling is spatially coherent over a distance of the order of the cyclotron radius. The coherence can be probed by a magnetic field parallel to the plane, which gives an Aharonov-Bohm phase to the tunneling amplitude. As a result, the current is an oscillatory function of the field. Tunneling of electrons between two ν = 1/2 quantum Hall parallel planes is studied. In order to calculate the physical electron Green's function, the Chern-Simons gauge field formalism is used, both in a perturbative many-body calculation and in a semiclassical calculation. In contrast to recent experiments, no gap in the physical electron density of states is found. A conjecture is made that e...

We calculate time correlation functions in the Bak-Sneppen model (Phys. Rev. Lett. 71 4083 (1993)), a model showing self-organised criticality. For a random neighbour version of the model, analytical results are presented, while on a one dimensional lattice we give numerical results. The power spectrum of these correlation functions shows 1/f-behaviour in both cases.

We consider the possibility of using measurements of anomalous magnetic moments of elementary particles as a possible test of the Einstein Equivalence Principle (EEP). For the class non-metric theories of gravity described by the T Hǫµ formalism we find several novel mechanisms for breaking the EEP, and discuss the possibilities of setting new empirical constraints on such effects.
